Testing Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation on dry skin

08:58:00

Hey there! In this blog post I am testing the Bourjois healthy mix foundation, to see how it looks on dry skin. When choosing a new foundation or trying to find a holy grail, I always wish that I could see how different foundations work on different skin types and realise that not many people or websites actually show how they look.  I have very pale and dry skin, I am always the lightest shade in any drugstore foundation that I try, and sometimes when I first try them they turn out too orange or too pink, or simply too drying for my skin. At this point I always wish more websites would show how they actually look on the skin, and not photo-shopped! I am on the hunt for the best drugstore foundation for dry skin, as many are made for normal or oily skin. I had the idea to make a little blog series just testing different products for my skin type, in the hope that they would be helpful for anyone else who is in my position and hopes to find their perfect foundation.

Many brands have such a bad shade range on each end of the spectrum, there are not enough dark or really pale shades, as if they expect everyone to have the same colour skin, which is simply not the case. It is rare for the lightest shade to actually be light enough for me, and most of the time I have to lighten it with concealer. It is even harder to find a foundation that is light enough but also gives a dewy finish and doesn't cling to my dry patches.

So after some research online I decided to purchase the Bourjois healthy mix foundation, after reading that it was good for dry skin. This is my first Bourjois product, you can buy it here.

The packaging on this foundation is lovely and looks really expensive, even though it only costs £9.99! I bought the shade light vanilla no. 51, which is the lightest shade they have. The foundation claims to be 'anti-fatigue' and to last up to 16 hours, and claims to contain minerals C. B and B5, to 'erase signs of fatigue for a flawless, fresh and healthy complexion'.

Apparently, it is also enriched with a fruit therapy formula, containing apricot for radiance, melon for hydration and apple to protect your youth. The foundation certainly smells fruity, so hopefully it does what it should do!

So this is a picture of my bare skin before any makeup at all! This was taken a few weeks ago for something else but my skin is the same nonetheless. This acts as a comparison for when the foundation is on.

I've inserted numerous pictures of the foundation on my face from different angles and in close ups. I applied it with a wet beauty blender in quite a thick layer, then used some concealer under my eyes and blended it the same way, and then lastly I set my face with the Rimmel stay matte setting powder.

It definitely blended very nicely and was easy to apply, I didn't find that it was patchy or anything like that.  It smelt very nice and was quite a thick consistency. As you can see in the photos, the colour match is not bad. When I first applied it, I found it to be slightly too orange for my skin, like most are. It was the tiniest bit too dark, but after I lightened my face with concealer and set it, it looked okay. In the photos you can see the colour difference from my neck.

Unfortunately, it did cling to the dry patch between my eyebrows and slightly on my nose, which can be seen in a photo,  and those are my worst dry areas. I was disappointed that it clung there as I was hoping it wouldn't, considering that it claims to be hydrating.  Aside from this, I did't find it to be drying on the other areas of my face. Usually foundation is also drying around my chin and forehead for me, but I found that this one didn't cling there.I would say that the coverage of this foundation is medium, it covers my redness and evens my skin tone but didn't cover my blemishes to the extent that I would have hoped. It definitely doesn't have the hydrated, dewy finish that it promises, and so I feel that this foundation is misleading. I would recommend it more for normal skin than dry skin. It did a better job than most drugstore foundations, but overall I wouldn't say this is an ideal foundation for dry skin or very pale skin. I think one shade lighter would have been perfect for me.

I then finished off my face with bronzer, blush and highlighter, then finished off with a setting spray and lipstick and took a few more pictures. The foundation did not oxidise , which is a plus, and I felt that it looked better on my face with bronzer and highlight, as the highlight added the dewyness I wanted. Overall I think the foundation works well with a full face, when it's lightened by concealer and finished with highlight, it looked very nice. However I wanted the foundation to give me some dewyness without having to rely on too much highlighter.

I then took another picture a bit later when the sun was lower, and the foundation looks nicer in this picture. After a while of applying it, I feel that some of the matt-ness died away and some of the oils returned to my face and it looked a bit more hydrated. I think the trick with this foundation is not to set it with any powder and to just be patient with it.

Overall, I think that from my previous experiences this is one of the best drugstore foundations I have used so far. The price is good, the colour is not too bad, and the finish is 50/50, but better if you have normal skin.  I would only recommend this to someone with dry skin if it wasn't extreme, but for anyone with super dry skin I think that this wouldn't work for them.

Anyway, I hope this review was somewhat helpful! I enjoyed writing this and hope to test many more makeup products in the future. If anyone has any questions or recommendations then feel free to leave a comment!

Meg x
